The Winterswijk market is known as the most pleasant market of the Achterhoek and we cannot deny that. Here you will find delicious fresh produce and regional products. The market can be visited around St. Jacob's church twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You can perfectly combine a visit to the market with exploring cozy Winterswijk.

St. Jacob's church: climb the tower with a beautiful view

In the heart of the center of Winterswijk is the St. Jacob's church. The centuries-old church has monumental status and is definitely worth a visit. The imposing building has a Gothic style and has stood in the center of Winterswijk for more than 12 centuries. Nowadays the church serves for exhibitions, tower climbs, and various tours. The tower is 57 meters high and you can climb up to 34 meters. Once at the top, you have a magnificent view over Winterswijk and the National Landscape.

Entrance to the church is free; a small fee is charged for climbing the tower. It is possible to take a guided tour of the church by a local volunteer upon request.  Contact the church to do so.

Museum Villa Mondrian and Transit East

As a museum enthusiast, visiting Villa Mondrian is an experience. This museum shows the early years of the world-famous Piet Mondrian. He is known for his time in Paris and New York, but his passion for painting began in Winterswijk.  Villa Mondrian displays the work of the young Piet Mondrian and his teachers.

In addition to the Villa Mondrian museum, museum workshop Transit East is also located in Winterswijk. This museum features historic traffic vehicles such as trains, buses, and trucks. These retired vehicles used to serve as means of transport at the regional transport company GTW. Those who appreciate old motorized vehicles will be amazed here!

The Synagogue of Winterswijk

One of the national monuments in Winterswijk is the Synagogue. The Synagogue forms the historical heart of the Spoorstraat and has a rich history. The surrounding buildings, a school, the mikveh, and the home of the pastor and teacher are a reminder of the once thriving Jewish community.  You can take a guided tour once a week where they tell all about the history of the Jewish community.
